The Brotherhood supports Barack Obama
Mr. Downing started the
Brotherhood Step Team in September. They stepped for the CPS Male Initiative
Project opening session. The Step Team Members include Robert Anderson,
Nick Sargent, Ihmotep Richblood, Darren Sanders, Jamal Starling, Preston Massie
and Joseph Newman
The
Brotherhood welcomes Mr. Anthony Downing to Kenwood and as a co-coordinator. He
created the Male Achievement Club at Schurz High School. He currently serves as
the Gear Up Coach at Kenwood.
The Brotherhood hosted a mini conference on March
30, 2007. It was entitled "Meeting of the Minds: A mini-conference to share
best practices of school based male mentoring organizations." This was the
collaboration of Kenwood and Woodlawn High School of
Baltimore Maryland. The students of
Washington H. S. in
Kansas City, Kansas were observing to gather information to start their
own male mentoring organization. The conference was actually held at the
DuSable Museum of African American History. There were thirty-five students
participating
The Brotherhood is the impetus for
the district wide male initiative project. Phase One was the Male Development
Symposium at Kenwood. Phase Two was the Coordinator's Conference at Bogan H.S.
Phase Three was the Student Development/Student Voice at DePaul University.
Phase Four - Culminating Awards Ceremony will be held on May 1, 2007 at
Hyde Park
H. S. at 1:00 p.m.

Congratulations to Brendan Lane on receiving the
Creativity Book Scholarship from the men of the Chicago chapter of Kappa Alpha
Psi Fraternity, Inc.
Congratulations to Cortez Hicks,
DeMarcus Hyler, and Corzail Nicholson who completed a twenty week
Entrepreneurial Project sponsored by the Chicago Urban League. The Youth
Investor/ Entrepreneur Project ensures that students will understand basic
business and economic principles. The project teaches them how to manage
personal finances, pursue career opportunities in the financial world and
practice the principles of investments and entrepreneurship.
The
2nd Annual Freedom College Tour was a huge success. We toured Alcorn
State University, Jackson State University, The University of Alabama, Stillman
College, Georgia Institute of Technology, and Morehouse College.

The Brotherhood was honored at the Kappa Alpha Psi North Central
Province meeting on April 14, 2006. We were selected by the Kappa Phi chapter
of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc.

2 nd Annual
Culminating Ceremony will be held on Friday, May 20, 2005 at 3:45 p.m. in the
King Room
The Brotherhood of Kenwood Academy
was awarded a $2500 grant from the Youth Innovation Fund to create a manual on
student male leadership and male mentoring. The grant awarding period is from
May, 2005 until May, 2006. This grant was the hard work of: Charles Merrick,
Brian Tate, Chris Coleman, Muyideen Odoffin, Kenneth Whitehead, Kenneth Patrick,
Michael Lee, Terrance Patterson, and Jerode Rodgers.
The Brotherhood
was funded through DonorsChoose to receive a grant from a private donor. The
grant was specifically awarded to provide weekly refreshments. The grant amount
is $365.00.
The 2 nd Annual Male Student
Retreat will be held on Monday, May 23, 2005 at Northern Illinois University.
The purpose of the retreat is to empower the elders of the Brotherhood to accept
their civic responsibility towards each other. The retreat will allow time for
the Brotherhood members to collaborate on the activities and events for 2005-06
school year.
The End of the
School year social will be held on Saturday, June 18, 2005 from noon until 5:00
p.m. in Schaumburg at the Paintball amusement center. The cost is $18.00 which
includes the transportation.
